New Hyundai Sonata Available Now at Suntrup Hyundai Wentzville

The Hyundai Sonata competes in crowded field of reasonably-priced midsize family sedans that includes vehicles like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry as well as the Ford Fusion and Chevy Malibu. But Hyundai has staked out solid ground for the Sonata, by offering a nice range of drivetrain options, handsome and restrained styling, a very quiet interior and a wealth of innovative new technologies that power everything from the infotainment center to the driver assist system.

Power and Performance

The main engine offering for the Sonata sedan is very capable 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque; it delivers a very respectable 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway (29 mpg combined).

For better acceleration and equally good fuel economy, buyers should consider the smaller 1.6-liter turbocharged Eco four-cylinder that produces 177 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. For real power though, go with the bigger 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that comes with the Sport 2.0T model; it pumps out 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It sacrifices a bit in fuel economy, with an EPA rating of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

Then there are the hybrid Sonata, including a regular hybrid and the plug-in hybrid, or Sonata PHEV. The basic Sonata Hybrid has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a 38 kilowatt electric motor. It's good for 38 mpg city and 43 mpg highway. The Sonata PHEV uses the same engine along with a 50-kilowatt motor to produce EPA fuel economy of 39 mpg (city/highway) and 99 mpg-e. It has a very respective electric-only driving range of 27 miles.

Features and Options

The Hyundai Sonata is available in five basic trims - include base, SE, Sport, Eco and Limited. Two additional trims - the Sport 2.0T and the Limited 2.0T reflect the fact they come with the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo.

The base Sonata includes must-haves like A/C and cruise control and full power windows and locks, as well as Bluetooth connectivity. Moving up a level to the Sonata SE makes a lot of sense given the incremental price difference, as it brings a 7.0-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a rearview camera, heated side mirrors and a 60/40 split folding seat back.

The Sonata Sport adds larger 17-inch wheels, dual exhausts and the Sonata Eco gets the more fuel-efficient engine. Both come with daytime running lights and a power driver seat. The Sport can also be ordered with a nice Value Edition package that includes heated front seats, a sunroof, keyless ignition and a remote opening trunk. The Sport 2.0T gets a bigger engine, sports seats and a sport-tuned suspension, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a rear diffuser with quad exhaust tips.

The Sonata Limited takes the chrome and carbon-fiber styling on the Sport down a notch for a more grown-up look. It includes leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, 18-inch wheels and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Sonata Limited 2.0T is fully decked out with a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, driver assist features like adaptive headlights and automatic high beams, a lane departure warning system and automatic pre-collision braking.
